Dark Fibre

Tele2 Wholesale manages an extensive dark fibre network in Sweden. Some parts of it are owned exclusively by the Tele2 group, while other are co-owned in partnership with high-voltage grid owners Svenska Kraftnät, Vattenfall, Fortum or various municipal and urban utilities. Tele2 Wholesale has organized its dark fibre networks in three categories:

  • Perfect for core infrastructure.
  • Able to build your own WDM solutions.
  • Connecting your local points easily.

Urban dark fibre services: Swedish urban optical fibre networks have frequently been established by power utilities owned by the municipal councils with the intention to provide a commercially neutral infrastructure, in which all service providers may lease bandwidth. Having a single physical network in an urban area simplifies maintenance. The urban networks are essential components in the national telecom infrastructure and therefore they use state-of-the-art technology and are continuously upgraded. The Tele2 group is a co-owner of such networks in several Swedish cities and towns, where Tele2 Wholesale provides urban dark fibre services.

Transport dark fibre services: Tele2 collaborates with three major electricity distributors – Svenska Kraftnät, Vattenfall, and Fortum – in supplying transport dark fibre to the six most important Nordic cities: Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Copenhagen, Oslo and Helsinki. (Several nearby cities may also be connected to these services by special arrangement.) These services utilize fibre-optic cables installed in the national power grid.

Municipal dark fibre services: Tele2 manages an extensive municipal dark fibre network (BAS fibre) in the Scania Administrative Region (Region Skåne) through the SkåNet company, which serves as the overall representative of Tele2. This regional network is made of a high-capacity optic fibre with a combined length of 2,000 km. It reaches 253 geographic locations with a total of over one million inhabitants. BAS was established under special contractual stipulations and therefore it must be administered separately from all other Tele2 Wholesale operations, though it is of course seamlessly interconnected with them.

Optic Channel

An optic channel comprises one or more fixed point-to-point connections in the form of wavelengths in the Tele2 fibre-optic network. In such arrangements, Tele2 uses wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology to multiplex a number of optical carrier signals onto a single optical fibre by using different wavelengths (i.e. colours) of laser light. This method also enables bidirectional communication in one fibre. All in all, it multiplies manifold the transmission capacity of a single strand.

  • Active Optic Channel: Tele2 Wholesale provides both laser equipment and fibre cable to the customer.
  • Passive Optic Channel: The customer attaches his own laser equipment to a fibre cable supplied by Tele2 Wholesale.

  • Great for long transports.
  • Cheaper than building your own WDM system.
  • Great Core Network product.

Reserved Capacity

Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) is a standardized transport protocol for the transfer of multiple digital bit streams over optical fibre using lasers or highly coherent light from light-emitting diodes (LEDs). At low transmission rates data can also be transferred via an electrical interface. SDH is designed to transmit many types of data simultaneously and efficiently. The standard is used globally outside the United States and Canada.

  • The only contender to the big monopoly.
  • Coverage all over Sweden.
  • Same large fiber infrastructure is still being used.

Tele2 is currently one of the few telecommunications operators in Scandinavia with its own SDH Backbone. It extends to more than 50 locations throughout Sweden and is monitored 24/7 by Tele2's Network Operations Centre (NOC). It has been designed with full redundancy between the nodes and therefore its minimum availability is 99.95%. The backbone can be accessed by fibre, copper and radio.

The Reserved Capacity service provided by Tele2 Wholesale is intended as a building block for other telecommunications carriers, integrators and service providers when establishing and developing value-added services.

IP Capacity VPN

If a major organization with premises scattered all over the globe wishes to establish a common corporate network, the VPN technology will prove useful. Earlier, the organization would have had to lease fixed lines from a telecom provider to connect distant locations. The advantages of such an arrangement used to be stability and reliability, but it would also be expensive with costs rising sharply as distances increased.

  • Copper solution is EFM based.
  • High speed copper connections making Tele2 the premium SHDSL supplier in Sweden.
  • A large number of add-on services.

State-of-the-art VPN technology is nowadays as reliable but much cheaper. It replaces the fixed lines with virtual internet tunnels that connect the separate premises. When the routing is configured the users will experience the same performance as with fixed lines.

The Tele2 IP network was founded in 1991 as the first commercial Swedish IP network – then known as “SWIPnet” – for both business and residential use. Tele2’s IP core network gradually expanded and today it has transformed itself into the global autonomous carrier-grade AS1257. It is one of the most extensive networks in Europe with a presence in 13 European and American countries and it is continuously updated to become more granular. Its operations in Sweden encompass all major cities.

Ethernet Capacity

Ethernet is a group of standardized computer networking technologies for Local Area Networks (LANs). Systems communicating over Ethernet divide a stream of data into shorter pieces called frames. Each frame contains source and destination addresses and error-checking features, allowing damaged data to be detected and re-transmitted.

  • Copper solution is EFM-based.
  • High speed copper connections making Tele2 the premium SHDSL supplier in Sweden.
  • QinQ enabled services.

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a mechanism in high-performance telecommunications networks that directs data from one network node to the next based on short path labels rather than long network addresses. MPLS is for example used to forward Ethernet traffic.

Tele2 Wholesale owns one of the most powerful MPLS backbones in the Nordic countries with a capacity up to 10 Gbit/s. It reaches throughout Sweden with nodes in all major cities and is built on fibre optic rings and DWDM wavelengths that are fully redundant. This creates high accessibility for the Ethernet capacity service. The technology offers high capacity with short delays and the service is reliable, scalable and cost-efficient.

The staff at Tele2’s Network Operations Centre (NOC) monitors the backbone 24/7 and responds quickly if a problem should arise. The service Ethernet Capacity provided by Tele2 Wholesale is intended as a building block for other telecommunications carriers, integrators and service providers when establishing and developing value-added services.

IP Transit

The Tele2 IP network was founded in 1991 as the first commercial Swedish IP network – then known as “SWIPnet” – for both business and residential use. Tele2’s IP core network gradually expanded and today it has transformed itself into the global autonomous carrier-grade AS1257. It is one of the most extensive networks in Europe with a presence in 13 European and American countries and it is continuously updated to become more granular. Its operations in Sweden encompass all major cities.

  • Great for eyeballer networks.
  • IPv&6 Native Capable, dual stacked.
  • Existing and thriving infrastructure all over Europe.

Tele2’s long experience of designing and running large IP networks has given the company in-depth knowledge how to make the infrastructure resilient and thereby fulfilling the customers’ demands for service availability. The AS1257 is built on fibre optic rings and DWDM wavelengths with a redundant PoP architecture in all layers and there are always two or more back haul exits per core node (link redundancy). The distribution layer is connected to two core nodes (node redundancy). The high speed network has at least two IP core sites per city (site redundancy). High-end Cisco equipment is deployed everywhere, including Carrier Routing System (CRS1 and 3).

Tele2 ensures a non-overbooking policy in fault scenarios, both in long hauls links (city-to-city) or edge exchange links (network interconnects). This ensures the smooth running of services like multicast CATV play-outs and voice traffic for both fixed and mobile customers, all safeguarded by seven classes of QoS throughout the IP core and by natively enabled IPv6. Tele2’s Network Operation Centre monitors the IP core network 24/7 and the staff responds quickly if a problem should arise.
